When to Apply Barricade 18-0-4

Spring Applications

To keep summer annual weeds away, whether you have northern or southern turf, apply Barricade 18-0-4 in early spring. Make sure to do this before the soil temperature hits 55 degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of four inches. This timing will stop weed seeds from germinating.

Fall Applications

You can also use Barricade 18-0-4 in the fall to prevent winter annual weeds like poa annua. The ideal time to apply pre-emergent is before soil temperatures drop below 70°F consistently. This depends on your location but is typically between mid-September and early October.

Barricade 18-0-4 and Seeding

Just like Barricade stops weeds from sprouting, it can also prevent grass seed from germinating.

If you've already seeded, hold off on applying Barricade 18-0-4 for 60 days or until after the second mowing, whichever takes longer.

The waiting period before you can seed or overseed after using Barricade 18-0-4 depends on your climate and how much Barricade 18-0-4 you applied. Check out the table here for the recommended intervals.

It’s only been spread a

"It’s only been spread a few days. Very green! In minnesota the temperature has been up and down. I hope my application beat the 55 degree, at 4 inches deep. My goal was to apply before the bad actors germinate 🤞. TBD."

My spring go-to

"I have been using this for a few years now, 2 years in middle TN and now this year in Central IL. It always provides a quick spring green up! I don’t have a bad weed problem, so not sure if it’s tackling all of my weed needs, but I’m so happy with it that I keep buying it. I also like the double duty of fertilizer and weed control in one bag."

Courtney (5/5)

I have been using Andersons

"I have been using Andersons products as prescribed for about 3 years. I've recommended them to neighbors and friends. Unfortunately, not this year. Besides the bags becoming substantially smaller, at the same price, the results have been disappointing. Weeds are winning. Despite treating in late fall and before spring, the results are as if no treatments have occurred. Imsges are from 3/12/26. Unfortunately, an end to a formally good relationship."

Fantastic Product

"Great results!!! I have been battling for the past year with weeds and trying to reestablish my Bermuda sod. I have some zero over seeding and just stuck with the plan. Andersons products have made me a believer."

Excellent product

"So far too early to tell. I have use the Baricade once last season and it appears to keep my weeds at a minimum. What impressed me most was the Carbon product. The change in my lawn was almost magical. I can’t wait to get some more."

Q&A

Okay to use this in early Spring if I over-seeded in the Fall?
Yes! You may apply Barricade 18-0-4 the next spring after overseeding in the fall.
I plan to overseed my lawn in September. Is it safe to apply barricade plus lawn food in the spring to prevent crabgrass. I don't want to kill the grass seed I plant n the fall.
Yes, you may apply a pre-emergent the following spring after overseeding in the fall.
Hi there, Greetings from Central FL! Used several Anderson products and have been pleased. This is my second season using barricade w fertilizer. My question is how long do I need to wait to reapply a traditional fertilizer? We have fertilizer ban starting rain season Jun 1 till Sep.... I applied around 1st/2nd week of April and will be using on Zoysia lawn. Appreciate your insight thanks!
You should wait at least 30 days after applying Barricade 18-0-4 to apply another fertilizer.
How long should I wait before overseeding some “thin” spots in my yard after using Barricade Plus Lawn Food 18-0-4?
Barricade will inhibit new grass growth if applied to soon before/after seeding. We recommend applying Barricade in the spring and then seeding in the fall, or seeding in the spring and then waiting to apply Barricade in the fall.
The instructions for the Fertilizer with 0.426% Barricade Herbicide says to wait 4-6 months before overseeding my lawn. I have a few small “plugs” to overseed and in one small area my grass is thin so I'd like to overseed there too. I need to apply the pre-emergent now (Seattle area) so I need to wait until August to overseed? Thank you.
Barricade will inhibit new grass growth if applied to soon before/after seeding. We recommend applying Barricade in the spring and then seeding in the fall, or seeding in the spring and then waiting to apply Barricade in the fall.
